Dr. Maredia D. L. Warren, Professor Emerita, served as Professor and Coordinator of Music Education at New Jersey City University. An active choral director, clinician, mentor, and music coach, she is the founder and director of the Unity Ensemble, a vocal group specializing in the performance of music from the African and African-American genres. In July 2019, Dr. Warren was invited to give a presentation, Creativity and the African American Spiritual, for the World Choral Music Expo Singing Network, held in Lisbon, Portugal. Dr. Warren’s international music activities include performing tours, study, and workshops in West Africa, South Africa, Australia, Canada, China, Cuba, and Europe. She earned degrees from Columbia University, Howard University, and Kodály Certificates from the University of Hartford, and the Kodály Pedagogical Institute in Kecskemet, Hungary.
She has conducted numerous honor choirs including the New Jersey All State Mixed Chorus; New Jersey All State Women’s Chorus; Massachusetts American Choral Directors Women’s Honor Choir; All Cape Cod and Islands Chorus; Cobb County Children’s Honor Choir of Georgia; Central Jersey Region II Chorus; North Jersey Region I Chorus; All Sussex County Chorus; and All Bergen County Chorus. A retired music teacher from the Teaneck School District, she was Director of Choral Music at Teaneck High School in Teaneck, New Jersey. Under her direction, the choruses appeared in highly acclaimed performances throughout New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Vermont, South Carolina, Quebec City and Montreal, Canada. Most notable was the group’s performance in “An Evening with Maya Angelou” sponsored by Iota Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha. She previously held positions at William Paterson University, Montclair State University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and Herbert H. Lehman College. Dr. Warren is active in the musical life of Bergen County, performing for numerous civic, community, and religious programs. She is presently Music Director of Christ Episcopal Church Teaneck. She was Music Director, organist for the Presbyterian Church of Teaneck for 18 years, and Galilee United Methodist Church Englewood for 22 years. Her creative works include original compositions and arrangements for piano, voice, choir, organ, and chamber ensembles. She received honors and recognition from Princeton University, New Jersey City University, the Bergen County Coalition of 100 Black Women, Howard University Alumni Association, National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women, the National Association of Negro Musicians, and Iota Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha. |
